Race Race And Race Essay - 1650 Words
Race has been a controversial topic for many years. Depending on your race it can be a blessing or a misfortune. According, to articles such as ââ¬Å"Ten Things Everyone Should Know About Raceâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Race: Is It a Valid Issue?â⬠they all come to the conclusion that race is a social construct because race cannot be determined by genetics or the color of the skin. There is no such thing as subspecies we are all human beings. Yet, for many yearsââ¬â¢ people of European ancestry (whites) have committed monstrous acts towards people of color. Whites enslaved people of color tearing countless families apart, and taking away liberties that every human being should possess. As the issue of race continues, many laws have been implemented as an attempt to mitigate white supremacy; however, alongside with each successful attempt, white supremacy continues prevailing. Background In 1537, thanks to the efforts of Bartolome de Las Casas, a Catholic priest, one of the first successful attempts towards equality was achieved (Manchaca CH.2). Pope Paul III declared Indians to be human beings able to own property and thus it was illegal to enslave Indians (Manchaca CH.2). However, as Indians gained their freedom Africans lost theirs. The importation of African slaves to Mexico began in 1527 and drastically increased between 1599 and 1637 (Manchaca CH.2). Spaniards were aware that they were enslaving human beings and therefore, compensated by giving them the right to marry the spouse of their choiceShow MoreRelatedRace And Race : Race3289 Words à |à 14 Pages The problem with this concept is that people believe it to be a positive idea. Essentially, race is all a bout perception. One person may separate races based on a certain category of traits while another person uses totally different guidelines to define what races there are. Race has ultimately been created socially, therefor has no biological components until people connect the two terms. Dynamic Compilation Framework
Question: Write an essay on Dynamic Compilation Framework for Controlling Microprocessor Energy and Performance. Answer: Energy and power management forms an important part in the performance of any hardware system. One of such mechanism called as Dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) is presented in this paper for optimizing the power and energy in the hardware system of microprocessor. An extensive real time performance analysis for DVFS is done for measuring CPU current and voltage. Algorithms developed for DVFS has been divided in two parts called decision and selection algorithm. Readings of experimental results are analyzed to compare the DVFS performance with other techniques. It presents extensive analysis of dynamic and static methods using experimentation. Different specifications were discussed in terms of performance. SPEC2KFP, SPEC2K INT, SPEC95 FP, Olden has energy saving of 70%, 44%, 64%, 61% respectively. On standard the method guide to 3 to5 times improvement in the EDP or energy delay product as compared to static voltage scaling. A design framework has been designed for this. The results were based on different methods described. The improved efficiency and promising results gives the DVFS an edge ahead of other technologies. Although an improvement is possible, if framework is designed for particular microprocessors. Also by overcoming challenges faced by DVFS, a more efficient design can be prepared.

Mold lab report Essay Example
Mold lab report Paper How does moisture affect mold on bread? Aim In this lab I will research how moisture affects the mold of bread. My research question is therefore: How does moisture affect mold on bread? I will prepare 4 pieces of bread with different moisture and look at how it affects the mould. Hypothesis think the wetter the bread is the more mould there is going to be. But I think that if I put too much water on it will begin later or not. The mold will grow more with more water because mould requires a moist environment for the reproduction. I also expect that near to the end the moisture will reach its highest level and will not grow anymore. Variables Dependent variable : my dependent variable is the mould Independent variable : The moisture Controlled variable : The temperature, the type of bread, the exposure to air and light. Materials 2 pieces of bread A pipette Water A Petri dishes A sellable bag Method 1 . Get all the equipment and materials together. 2. Remove the crust of the bread and divide them in 4 even pieces. 3. Fill the Petri dish with 5 drops and dip the first piece of bread in it. After you have done that put the piece of bread in a bag. 5. Do this also with the 10 drops and 15 drops. 6. Check overtime you are in the lab how much mould there is and write it up in millimeters squared. Results Day Dry, area of mold in mm 5 water drops, area of mold in mm 10 water drops, area of mold in mm 15 water drops, area of mold in mm 4 O mm 7 19 mm 9 mm 42 mm 11 mommy mommy mommy mommy 14 50 mm 170 mm 80 mm 260 mm calculated all my results with a ruler and calculator. Most of the time the mould as very spread so I had to measure it and add it. If it was a square or rectangle multiplied the 2 sides with each other, If it was a triangle I did the base times the height divided by 2, and if it was in a circle Multiplied pie by the squared radius (n x re). Conclusion From my data I can see that there certainly is more mould if it has a higher moisture. The bread with the most moisture started growing first and the others started growing all at the same time. The only difference was that the one with he most mould grew the faster than the rest. It was also noticeable that the bread with 5 drops got more mould than the bread with 10, but the one with 15 drops had the most. My explanation for this is that, or I did the experiment not good enough ( maybe the water was not spread enough with the 10 drops), or that mould chooses his own way, and that it i unpredictable where it exactly is going to grow. Eventually my hypothesis did not totally come true, because none of bread did reach its highest level of mould, so there was no part in the graph here a line flattened. Evaluation think my results were reliable enough to conclude what I have concluded, but they are not very accurate. It was quite hard to exactly measure how much mould there was on the bread, because you had 2 sides, and mould also grows in the inside, I decided that I wouldnt measure that because in is almost impossible to see. If I would do this experiment again, I would make some minor changes. I would put the water on each bread on the exact same place to be as accurate as possible. Also I would measure the mould more.

The Healing Uses of Artificial Skin
The Healing Uses of Artificial Skin Artificial skin is a substitute for human skin produced in the laboratory, typically used to treat severe burns. Different types of artificial skin differ in their complexity, but all are designed to mimic at least some of the skinââ¬â¢s basic functions, which include protecting against moisture and infection and regulating body heat. How Artificial Skin Works Skin is primarily made of two layers: the uppermost layer, the epidermis, which serves as a barrier against the environment; and the dermis, the layer below the epidermis which makes up roughly 90 percent of the skin. The dermis also contains the proteins collagen and elastin, which help give the skin its mechanical structure and flexibility. Artificial skins work because they close wounds, which prevents bacterial infection and water loss and helps the damaged skin to heal. For example, one commonly used artificial skin, Integra, consists of an ââ¬Å"epidermisâ⬠made of silicone and prevents bacterial infection and water loss, and a ââ¬Å"dermisâ⬠based on bovine collagen and glycosaminoglycan. The Integra ââ¬Å"dermisâ⬠functions as an extracellular matrix ââ¬â a structural support found between cells that helps regulate cell behavior ââ¬â that induces a new dermis to form by promoting cell growth and collagen synthesis. The Integra ââ¬Å"dermisâ⬠is also biodegradable and is absorbed and replaced by the new dermis. After several weeks, physicians replace the silicone ââ¬Å"epidermisâ⬠with a thin layer of epidermis from another part of the patientââ¬â¢s body. Uses of Artificial Skin Treating burns:à Artificial skin is commonly used to treat burn injuries, especially if the patient does not have enough healthy skin that can be transplanted to the wound. In such cases, the body cannot generate skin cells quickly enough to heal the damaged skin, and the patientââ¬â¢s injury may become lethal due to significant fluid loss and infection. Artificial skin can thus be used to immediately close the wound and improve survival.Treating skin disorders:à Some artificial skin products like Apligraf have been used to treat chronic wounds on the skin, such as ulcers, which are open wounds that heal very slowly. They may also be applied to skin disorders like eczema and psoriasis, which often span a large portion of the body and may benefit from artificial skins laden with medicine, which can easily wrap around the affected area.Research in consumer products and medicine:à Aside from its uses in the clinical setting, artificial skin may also be used to model human skin for research. For example, artificial skin is used as an alternative to animal testing, which is often used to gauge how a cosmetics or medical product affects the skin. However, this testing may cause pain and discomfort to the animals and does not necessarily predict the response of human skin. Some companies like Lââ¬â¢Orà ©al have already used artificial skin to test many chemical ingredients and products. Artificial skin may also simulate skin for other research applications, including how skin is affected by UV exposure and how chemicals in sunscreen and medicines are transported through skin. Types of Artificial Skin Artificial skins mimic either the epidermis or dermis, or both epidermis and dermis in a ââ¬Å"full-thicknessâ⬠skin replacement. Some products are based on biological materials like collagen, or biodegradable materials not found in the body. These skins can also include a non-biological material as another component, such as Integraââ¬â¢s silicone epidermis. Artificial skins have also been produced by growing sheets of skin live skin cells taken from the patient or other humans. One major source is the foreskins of newborns, taken after circumcision. Such cells often do not stimulate the bodyââ¬â¢s immune system- a property that allows fetuses to develop in their motherââ¬â¢s wombs without being rejected- and hence are much less likely to be rejected by the patientââ¬â¢s body. How Artificial Skin Differs From Skin Grafts Artificial skin should be differentiated from the skin graft, which is an operation in which healthy skin is removed from a donor and attached it to a wounded area. The donor is preferably the patient themself, but could also come from other humans, including cadavers, or from animals like pigs. However, artificial skin is also grafted onto a wounded area during treatments. Improving Artificial Skin for the Future Though artificial skin has benefited many people, a number of drawbacks can be addressed. For example, artificial skin is expensive as the process to make such skin is complex and time-consuming. Furthermore, artificial skin, as in the case of sheets grown from skin cells, can also be more fragile than their natural counterparts. As researchers continue to improve on these, and other, aspects, however, the skins that have been developed will continue to help save lives. Simon Everly PLC Financial analysis and decision making Essay
Simon Everly PLC Financial analysis and decision making - Essay Example INTERPRETATION OF LIQUIDITY RATIOS Liquidity of an organization is its ability to meet its short term duties (obligations), and it is amongst the major measures of organizationsââ¬â¢ financial health (Brigham & Ehrhardt 2011). The liquidity ratios for Simon Everly PLC determined in this task involved: Current Ratio and Acid Test Ratio. Interpretation of the Current Ratio This ratio shows the ability of an organization to pay its short liabilities using its short term Assets (Brigham & Ehrhardt 2011). Current ratios of orgainzations should be equal to or more one (1). If the ratio is either equal to one (1) or more than one (1), the organization is capable of satisfying its short term obligations using its current Assets (Brigham & Ehrhardt 2011). A current ratio that is less than 1 (one), on the other hand, means that cannot satisfy the needs of its short term liabilities, and therefore, is facing liquidity problems (Brigham & Ehrhardt 2011). Simon Everlyââ¬â¢s Current Ratio Th e current ratios for the organization as of the 2011/12 and 2010/2011 financial years were shown in the below: Current Ratio as of 2011/12 Financial year was 1.72. Current Ratio as of 2010/11 Financial year was 1.94. ... This shows that even though the organizationââ¬â¢s current ratio liquidity was more than one (1), it was on the down trend, and if proper actions are not taken on time the organization may be faced with liquidity problems in future. The consequences of this downward trend can be solved by the proposed strategy to obtain more funds for additional investments. Interpretation of the Acid Test Ratio The use of current ratio alone is not sufficient to determine liquidity for organisations since it involve certain current assets such as inventory that may be hard to convert to cash. Therefore, Acid test ratio which eliminates these assets (Assets that are difficult to convert into cash such as inventories) will give the real picture of the organizationââ¬â¢s liquidity (financial health) (Thukaram 2007). Its interpretation is same as that of current ratio. That is, if it is more than one the organization is financially healthy in terms of liquidity and vice versa if it is less than on e (Thukaram 2007). Simon Everlyââ¬â¢s Acid Test Ratio The Acid Test ratios for the organization as of the 2011/12 and 2010/2011 financial years were shown in the below: Acid Test Ratio as of 2011/12 Financial year was 0.9055 Acid Test Ratio as of 2010/11 Financial year was 1.19. While the Acid Test Ratio for 2010/11 Financial year was more than one (favourable, 1.19), the one for 2011/12 Financial year was less than one (unfavourable, 0.9055). This means the organization was able to meet the all obligations of short term liabilities using its current assets during the 2010/11 financial year. As of the financial year 2011/12 the organizationââ¬â¢s liquidity was questionable. Therefore, necessary actions are required in order to improve the organizationââ¬â¢s liquidity. It is suggested that the

Special education students revenue, analysis that shows compartive Research Paper
Special education students revenue, analysis that shows compartive costs of educating those students inside the district as opposed to outside the district - Research Paper Example Since each special child has their own way of understanding, the school system tends to provide more learning hours for them. This caring includes adding to the budget of the school what is needed by the child therefore receiving provisions from the federal government. A child with the development disorder will need a tutor for most of their life in order to be self-dependent and the school has to provide. Although intellectual giftedness can benefit from a different program, the term special needs education refers to those that are underprivileged and this reduces their ability for learning. Special education has institutions, but it is also under integration in the education system in developed countries and each school has a program for special needs students. This modification tries to see that the most number of students, even with special needs, receive service from the general education environment for more inclusive learning activities. Some special cases, however, have to receive handling in special schools, which have specific programs for severe cases. Schools in Saddle Brook school district have approval from the New Jersey department of education. The following is a table showing the average enrollment of the school for the past five years ending with the fiscal year June 30 2012. Saddle brook district is financially well off with residential homes occupying most of it. The district is almost 95% developed which means further development is quite hard to implement. With such a huge residential population, it means that the district funds the schools via the local tax base. This means that for all developments in the district, the community is directly responsible and they determine how much the school has to upgrade the programs. The district has several schools despite its consideration as a small suburban district. It has three K-6 elementary schools; long, Smith and Franklin, the Washington school; houses the special

The Importance of Reading Essay Example for Free
The Importance of Reading Essay Reading is a necessity for some people and a hobby for others, but either way it is something that we start to take for granted as adults, forgetting that there was once a time when we couldnt read. The sad fact is that for many adults, this is still the case. They lose out on the joys and the benefits of being able to read, and quite often it stems from lack of commitment and time from the parents during childhood. In the Gulf countries alone there are approximetly 7. 5 million people who are illiterate (those aged 15 years or above who can not read or write). There are a great many reasons why reading with your child is so important. Of course, it is the sort of activity that will help you to bond with the child as well as help to form your childs imagination. But there are so many additional important factors ? ones that could help to shape the life of your child. Reading is the fundamental foundation required by children on which to base all learning. Without the ability to read effectively, every other subject taught at school is going to be difficult or impossible to grasp. Learning to read is no easy task for some children, and the most crucial years in terms of literacy development are from birth to the age of around eight. Taking the time to read with your pre-school child will help to really lay the foundations for success. Your child will start to recognise words, ask questions, and develop an interest as well as an eye for reading. Your child will start to make relevant connections between the words and their meanings. With your help, your child can enjoy the learning process, benefit from a firm foundation in literacy, and will be fully equipped to succeed when he or she starts school. Of course, you will need to change the methods you use to help with your childs reading as he or she grows older. As an infant, bright colours and noises are going to be attractive to your child. There are many interactive books available for infants to day, such as farm animal books with noises. Your infant will love helping you to press the button and then watching as you point out which animal the noise relates to. And pretty soon, your child will be doing it alone. Already, your child will have started associating sounds, words and pictures. As a toddler, your child will enjoy bedtime stories, and you can choose from a wide range of magical and colourful story books which will keep your toddler enthralled. You will find that you child develops an interest in pointing out pictures as you read, as well as wanting to try and read alone. If the story is one that you read regularly, you will be surprised at how the child will almost memorise that comes next, and may sometime jump in before you have a chance to finish the sentence. A couple of years on, and your child will be eager to start reading alone. You can encourage this by reading the first part of sentences in a book from which you have regularly read bedtime stories. You can then pass the book to your child to try and finish the sentence. A great deal of this may be done from memory, but the child will also be looking at the words, thus learning to associate the words with the story. Fun activities like picture games or stories with colouring in sections can also help to develop your childs interest at this age. Learning to read does not stem from learning the alphabet, which is a common misconception. A good reading foundation comes from interaction with a parent, who is able to make the art of reading and telling stories fun and magical for a child.
